Chase (Special Edition) Blu-ray for Fans

Renowned for its intricate narratives, Arthur Ripley's The Chase pushes the boundaries of the noir genre with its extraordinary take on the "wrong man" motif. In this film, Robert Cummings, renowned for his role in Saboteur, portrays Chuck Scott, a struggling war veteran who unexpectedly finds employment as a chauffeur to a wealthy, sadistic tycoon, Steve Cochran (from Private Hell 36), and his sinister bodyguard, Peter Lorre (My Favorite Brunette). As Scott becomes a savior figure to his boss's beleaguered spouse, he whiskers her away to Havana in a romantic escapade.

However, tragedy strikes when she is tragically stabbed at a bustling nightclub, leading to Scott being wrongly accused of murder. Fueled by desperation, he navigates the labyrinthine streets of Cuba in a desperate bid to clear his name. Screenwriter Philip Yordan, known for The Big Combo, adds layers of intrigue to the original plot, including a shocking twist in the final act that redefines the story beyond a typical tale of doomed love, creating a surreal and mind-bending experience – solidifying its place as a unique gem within the hardboiled genre.

Co-starring the legendary French actress Michèle Morgan (Port of Shadows), and masterfully directed by Arthur Ripley (Voice in the Wind), The Chase boasts additional features. The film has been expertly restored in high definition from 35mm elements preserved by UCLA. A commentary from filmmaker Guy Maddin enriches the viewing experience, complemented by two radio adaptations of Cornell Woolrich's source novel, The Black Path of Fear, featuring iconic actors Cary Grant and Brian Donlevy.
